FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
O.M.G.!
KGB-PROJECTS PRESENTS:

‘RELIGIONIS VIOLENTA’
exhibition

opens at London West Bank Gallery on September 7, 2012

London  -  “Those who believe in absurdities end up committing atrocities” [Voltaire, 1694-1778].
KGB-Projects presents Religionis Violenta, a sensational group show with some of the most prevalent artists from the UK and Malta, at the prestigious London West Bank Gallery in West london’s Notting Hill from 7 - 11 September, 2012.

Expect a tantalizing experience that stimulates the senses through vision, sound, smell and touch. The exhibition will be showcasing more than 30 selected artworks focusing on dark humour, irony and obscenity, revealing the artists’ taste for a bittersweet use of blasphemy, a snigger at and caustic provocation.

Religionis Violenta is taken from the Latin meaning for violent religion. The concept of the show initially emerged as a spontaneous reaction to the popular catchphrase ‘Where’s your GOD now?’ and the many conflicts that occur in the name of religion in a historical context.

The relationship between religion and HIV/AIDS is complicated and often controversial, as the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Greek churches are still in serious denial about human sexuality. We therefore decided to donate part of the art sale proceeds to AIDS Ark, a registered charity saving lives by enabling access to HIV medication and associated care at the frontiers of the developing world.

Open Call - KGB-Projects still welcomes applications from artists to submit work, info on how to enter can be found on their website www.kgbprojects.com. Deadline: 23 July 2012 @ 5pm. There will be awards & cash prizes for Best of Show and a Runner-Up, voted on by visitors and announced at the end of the Private View night.

PROVOKE, SHOCK AND AMEN TO THAT!

Lights in action, mystical aura and absolute power.

We are not narcissistic, we are individuals with the ability to change things, situations, our own lives (and those of others). We are not gods, but could be if we tried. Everyone has a superpower to use, it is in our hands.

With "Deus-Dei (Super-Ego)" it is intended to bring the concept of "power", leading to personal grounds, to political-religious struggles or social and cultural aspects. To create chaos and submit to the bare survival. We are survivors of a society full with superpowers, supergods and superegos.

Bright aura of the powerful people or those who think they are. Blinding lights that present reality, the differences between individuals (who are separated from the masses). Brightness of the altars, of the coins, crowns and scepters. Shining eyes and hopeful souls who trust on the changes. Shiny dark we all know and not so bright freedom we all want to meet.

The superegos are the parts that represent the moral and ethical thoughts received by the culture, for our environment. It's the love-hate we feel toward our society (parent, finally after all). Complicated sense of belonging to a group and the need of individuality, to lead the group.

Through painting, photography, installation, graffiti, sculpture, drawing and video art intended to show a small amount of power collected from different angles and the greatest number of possibilities. It uses humor and irony as a vehicle to get to the viewer, being direct and clear.

13 artists. 13 (big) Gods.

'Julie' at KunstRAI 2012

'Julie' by Suzanne Jongmans

Suzanne Jongmans mutates old materials into plastics and packing materials and turns old masters into new contemporary photographic works. The new elements in her photographs are like the ones used in the past, and were symbols of value.

I took this picture at the KunstRAI 2012 in Amsterdam by the stand of Galerie Wilms and was mesmerized by the purity of the model and the striking likeness of work of the old masters, such as the Girl with the Pearl Earring by Vermeer.

Geoffrey of St Art Gallery is having a well-deserved rest before tidying up the stand...

Taxidermy - To Art or Not To Art?!

I am lucky enough to be part of the manifold of artists at St Art Gallery, so I went along with them to the KunstRAI in Amsterdam. Beside having pieces in the exhibition myself and that of K-Guy, Bart Jansen brought along his cat Orvillecopter, Proctocopter (a flying rat) and his Trash-O-Mat. There was a lot of attention for the cat Orville and photographers were falling over each other to get a good shot of the now infamous cat. When Orvillcopter went global, the public opinion divides with animal rights militia going mental...Pros & Cons, is this art or animal cruelty?

Dutch artist Bart Jansen loved his pet cat so much that he decided to turn it into a piece of artwork. Jansen could not stand to think of life without his beloved cat and that is why he turned his cat, Orville into artwork and turned into a helicopter called the Orvillecopter.

While I was sitting in the 'chill' area taking it all in, I really don't understand what all the fuss was about, as just two stands further along Jaski Art Gallery had a stand full of stuffed dead animals on display, by two artists Les Deux Garçon. Why wasn't there a big fuss??? Here some pictures I took at the KunstRAI:

Rester sur la touche

I love their work. The sculptures are absurd but also moving, using materials found at antique shops and auctions. Not to shy away from the theatrical, they present their deer, lambs, pigs, birds and other animals often as Siamese twins or multiple births. The found attributes like toy pistols, notes and perfume bottles symbolises fear, doom, fate and mortality.

'Grillig Glas' - ('Unpredictable Glass')

Gonny's work doesn't fit in the traditional glass gallery, but can't be found in the street either. Yet, her work is a refence to the urban environment. "In the world of Urban and Street Art glass art is totally new. People are very surprised that the objects are made of real glass and want to touch it. That is totally fine! Glass is a fragile material, though it is a powerful statement. This tension between power and fragility makes glass so special to work with."
